Abstract

492,084. Change-speed gearing. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 28, 1938, No. 2745. Convention date, Feb. 5, 1937. [Class 80 (ii)] Combined hydraulic coupling and change-speed gearing of the type in which the torque is divided comprises two pistonoperated clutches 20, 21 and 23, 24, three brakes 46, 47, and 49, three trains of epicyclic gears 14-15, 31-30, and 41-40. One member 6 of the coupling is fast on a hollow shaft 5 and the other 7 is rigid with a sleeve 11 and a planet carrier 12. The driving shaft 1 is bolted to a casing 2 of the coupling. Brake drum 25 is fast with sun wheel 30 and drum 17 with sun 15. The clutch elements 21 rotate with carrier 12 and the elements 23 with a hub 22 and sleeve 11. Planet carrier 33 is bolted to drum 36, and its planets 31 mesh with an internal gear 34 integral with sun 40. The drum also carries planets 41 in mesh with an internal gear 43 solid with the driven shaft 50. When all the brakes and clutches are loose there is no drive. The gears are obtained as follows : first gear, brakes 46 and 47 are operated; second, clutch 20-21 and brake 47 ; third, brake 46 and clutch 23-24 ; fourth, the two clutches ; reverse, brakes 46 and 49. The ratios are ranges rather than definite numbers owing to the selective control over the relation between the speeds of the coupling vane 7 and the shaft 1 ; a further range is afforded by the controls of the unit comprising the annulus 34, sun 30, planets 31 and carrier 33, the variations within the ratios being dependent on engine speed and load.
