Abstract

Change-speed and reversing gearing; clutches, arrangements of.-The magneto 8 and the changespeed. gear on an engine used for a motor cycle or similar vehicle are driven from a pinion 5, itself driven by the pinion 3, used to drive the engine cam-shaft 4. The pinion 5 is freely carried by a hollow spindle 10 concentric with the transmission shaft 11. The pinion 5 is bolted to the clutch disc 16, the inner ring 21 being keyed to the hollow spindle 10. The clutch spring 23 acting through the slidable sleeve 24 and thrust plate 22, closes the clutch to couple the pinion 5 to the hollow spindle 10, a suitable control device being used to open the clutch. A toothed wheel 12 on the spindle 10 is in permanent engagement with one of the wheels of the composite gear wheel 13; a clutch pinion 28 on the shaft 11 controls the speed change. The clutch is contained in an extension 29 outside the casing 17 housing the change speed and other driving gear.
