Abstract

235,218. Matteucci, R. June 6, 1924, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing comprises a friction epicyclic train 12, 10, 11 in which the internal gear 12 is driven at different speeds by an auxiliary change-speed gear, a clutch 19, 20 being provided for direct driving. The cage 9 of the planet rollers 10 is solid with a driven shaft 6. The central gear 11 is held by an extension 38 of the gear casing 2. This gear 11 is split and is prized open by a lever 39 to produce engaging pressure, centering rollers 37 being also provided. The direct-driving clutch 19 is carried by a sleeve 17 feathered on a driving-shaft 5 which drives constantly a countershaft 7. The internal gear is constantly connected through clutch teeth 15 with a second sleeve 16 which is driven directly through clutch teeth 19, 21 and indirectly through gear pairs 24, 22 and 25, 23. Thus with the direct drive, the shaft 6 is driven at four speeds. Reversed driving is effected by an idler between the gears 24, 22. A different type of auxiliary gearing may be used. The friction train is, lubricated by a disc 31 on the shaft 7 which carries blades 32 which lift oil which finds its way through ports 33. A recess 36 is provided to catch broken parts from the clutch members 19, 20, 21 and prevents them entering the friction gearing.
