Abstract

402,778. Change-speed gearing; force-feed lubrication. WILSON, W. G., and WILSON, A. G., 23, Queen Anne's Gate, London. Feb. 29, 1932, No. 6096. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing comprising interconnected epicyclic trains is lubricated by one or more plunger pumps which force oil into the main centre line of shafting whence it is distributed centrifugally. The invention is described as applied to forms of the Wilson type change gearing such as is described in Specifications 164,042 and 312,128, [both in Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variablespeed &c.]. In Fig. 1, two similar pumps A, B are shown adapted to draw oil from a sump S and deliver it to aligned and communicating bores 27, 30 in driving and driven shafts a, g so that lubrication will proceed when either shaft is at rest. Oil is drawn in past a valve 40 when a plunger 21 rises, the plunger 21 being rigid with the strap 20, Fig. 2, of an eccentric 19 keyed to the shaft a. The plunger 21, which has a central bore 22, is supported in a disc 24 free to oscillate. On the rising stroke, the top of the core 22 is sealed by a plane part of the eccentric 19. During the whole of the descending stroke, the valve 40 stops egress of the oil and the top of the bore 22 is open to a semicircular groove 25 in the eccentric so that the oil is forced up the bore 22 and along the groove 25 and by means of aligned radial ducts 261, 26 in the eccentric and shaft into the central bore 27 whence it escapes radially at 29, Fig. 1. The pump B is similarly driven from the shaft g. A modification is described in which a pump in a like position to the pump B of Fig. 1 is driven by an eccentric fast with a sleeve extending from an annulus 9 of the reverse gear. Since in this arrangement the duct 261, Fig. 2, in the eccentric is turning over the duct 26 in the shaft, these ducts have to be connected by an annular connecting space which is provided between supporting bushes. In the form of change gearing shown in Fig. 1, there are four trains C, D, E and F side by side about the driving-shaft a. A double sun gear b of the first two forward-driving trains C, D is fast on the shaft a and the planet-carriers f and 10 of the train C and of the reverse train F are both fast on the driven shaft g. For first speed, the annulus h of train C is braked. There is then a simple reduction. For second speed, the annulus of train D alone is braked. The annulus' is then driven forwardly so that the speed is not so much reduced. For third speed, a drum 4 is braked which holds the sun y of train E. Planets v of train E rolling on sun y drive forward the annulus x of that train which is connected to rotate with the annulus h of train C which is thus driven faster than during second speed. The fourth speed is a solid drive obtained by putting in a friction clutch 12. Reversed driving results on braking the annulus 9 of train F, there being compounded action of trains C and F. In a modified form of change gearing described with reference to Fig. 4, not shown, the train corresponding to the train F of Fig. 1 is altered so that on braking the drum associated therewith an emergency low forward speed is produced by compounded action instead of a reversed drive.
