Abstract

442,820. Driving machines. PITTLER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK AKT.-GES., Wahren, Leipsic, Germany. May 20, 1935, No. 14730. Convention date, July 13, 1934. [Class 83 (iii)] [See also Group XXIV] A variable-speed driving-gear suitable for use with an automatic lathe and adapted to be arranged separate from the headstock thereof comprises a power-driven shaft, pick-off gears transmitting the drive to a second shaft, a double friction clutch on said second shaft for transmitting the drive along alternative paths to two transmissions to the spindle, further pick-off wheels interposed in one of said alternative paths and means associated with the spindle for the selective use of either of said transmissions for driving the spindle. The motor 1<m> or belt pulley 1<e> may be arranged within or outside the bed of the machine and rotates the shaft 2, which is connected with a second shaft 5, by pick-off gears 3, 4. Friction clutches 8, 9 on the latter shaft together with friction clutches 20, 33 on the separate headstock spindle 22, which is connected by chains 18, 31, or by toothed gears, with the gearbox, enable four speeds to be obtained with each group of pick-off wheels. A hand-operated reversing device comprising wheels 26-28, Fig. 3, mounted on a rotatable plate 34 is employed in the trains which gives speeds suitable for screw-cutting. Further pick-off wheels 14, 15 are also employed when the drive is via the friction clutch 8. The four possible gear trains are :-Firstly, friction clutch 8, gears and shafts 10-17, chain 18 and friction clutch 20 ; secondly, friction clutch 9, gears and shafts 23, 24, 16, 17, chain 18 and clutch 20 ; thirdly, friction clutch 8, gears and shafts 10-16, and 25-30, chain 31 and clutch 33 ; fourthly, clutch 9, gears and shafts 23-30, chain 31 and clutch 33 the latter two giving slow speed drives suitable for screw cutting and, as explained above, adapted for reversal. An over-run coupling 36 is interposed between the wheel 12 and shaft 13 to enable this wheel to run idly when the clutch 9 is engaged.
