Abstract

535,282. Turning. B.S.A. TOOLS, Ltd., and OGILVIE, W. Feb. 27, 1940, No. 3602. [Class 83 (iii)] An automatic lathe has a two-part driving shaft 2, 2a which may be coupled by a friction clutch comprising an inner member 15 mounted on the part 2 and engageable with an outer member 16 mounted on the part 2a, the part 2 also carrying a loose sleeve 7 carrying another outer clutch part 14, a chain sprocket 10 driving one part of a reversing clutch on the work spindle 13 and a gear wheel 8 driving a lay shaft 3 connected by sprocket gearing 20 to the other part of the work spindle clutch. The mainshaft part 2a and the lay shaft are connected by change gears 22, 23 and the inner clutch member is actuated by a lever 21 from an auxiliary cam shaft 26. When the clutch 15 is moved to the right the lay shaft is driven through the gears 22, 23, and the loose sleeve 7 is driven through the gears 9, 8. When the clutch is moved to the left the two parts of the driving shaft are disengaged and the sleeve 7 driven from the shaft 2, the lay shaft being driven by the gears 8, 9. The sprockets 10. 20 thus each have two speeds, giving a two-speed spindle drive for either direction of rotation.
