Abstract

529,669. Lathes &c. HERBERT, Ltd., A., and LLOYD, A. H. June 6, 1939, No. 16551. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe or other machine tool has a spindle 10 which is belt driven from quick change variable speed gearing 26 and a multi-speed electric motor 28. The motor drives gears 23, 24, in constant mesh with loose gears 16, 17 which may be selectively clutched to a shaft 15 by multi-plate clutches 18 operable by a member 19 connected to a control handle 22. The shaft 15 is connected through gears 14 to a twin pulley 13, belt geared to a similar pulley on the spindle. Alternatively single or treble pulleys may be used. The motor may be of four speed pole-changing type controlled from a wheel 29 and reversing lever 30. The motor 28 and gear box 26 are located on opposite sides of the hollow lathe foot 27 which encloses the driving belt. Specifications 382,784, [Group XXIV], and 392,616, are referred to.
