Abstract

340,779. Turning. HERBERT, SIR A., Dunley Manor, near Whitchurch, Hampshire. Jan. 1, 1930, No. 44. [Class 83 (iii).] A change-speed and reversing mechanism for the headstock of a lathe or like machine tool is adapted for use with a pulley shaft running at constant speed in one direction. The pulley shaft 4 is provided with two loose gears 9 and 12 either of which can be locked to the shaft by moving to the left or right respectively the clutch 13, these gears meshing with fixed gear 8 and slidable gear 10 mounted on a driving shaft 7. Sliding gears interposed between shaft 7 and the lathe spindle give to the latter any desired number of speed changes, sliding gears for eight speed changes being shown. If the clutch 13 is moved to the left, gears 9 and 8 drive shaft 7, but if it is moved to the right, gears 12 and 10 drive the shaft at a reduced speed. Thus sixteen changes of speed are possible in the forward direction. A lay shaft 15 with fixed gears 14 and 16, although shown in the same plane, is actually in triangular formation in end view with the shafts 4 and 7, the pulley shaft being uppermost. The wheel 14 on the lay shaft meshes with wheel 12 and when the wheel 10 is slid to the left it meshes with wheel 16, movement of the clutch to the right in this position giving a reverse drive to the shaft 7 and headstock, with eight possible changes of speed.
