Abstract

432,596. Broaching. HOPKINSONS, Ltd., BROWN, R. L., and METCALFE, T., Britannia Works, Wheathouse Road, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. April 12, 1934, No. 11041. [Class 83 (iii)] A double-ended broaching machine has means for automatically reversing the pull screw by which the broaches are traversed. The non-rotating pull screw a, to each end of which a broach may be connected, is moved by a rotatable nut b, mounted between thrust bearings in an oil-tight gear case u. Rotation of the nut in opposite directions is obtained through two gear sets p, one being a reverse drive, from a single belt pulley s. The gear wheels h of the driving trains are keyed to sleeves g which carry spring-pressed pawls e on their inner faces adapted to engage a tooth n provided on the periphery of a collar at each end of the nut b. Engagement of the pawls and nut teeth is controlled by circular cams j engaging the pawl teeth k, Fig. 3, and rotated by gear wheels i which run loose on the sleeves g and are of the same diameter as, but having a different number of teeth from, the adjacent gear wheels h, the gear wheels p driving both the gears hand i. The cams are so shaped as to provide for a continuous automatic reverse with a dwell, when both pawls are disengaged, between reversals.
