Abstract
430,044. Gearing varying in ratio as drive is applied to one or other end shaft ; turning-gear. BITHELL, W. J., Tudor Cottage, Mulgrave Road, Sutton, Surrey. Feb. 5, 1934, No. 3764. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXVII] In a power-transmission mechanism applicable to engine turning-gear, in which shafts 3, 4 are automatically coupled either directly or through reduction gearing according as one or other shaft is the driving shaft, a floating clutch ring 6 slidably splined on the shaft 4 has oppositely facing radial ratchet teeth on its lateral surfaces, for engagement respectively with corresponding teeth 13 on a disc integral with a pinion 8 mounted directly on the shaft 3, and on a gear wheel 12 connected to the shaft 3 through gearing 11, 9, 8. The shaft 3 may be that of a dynamo-electric machine and the shaft 4 may be coupled to an engine shaft directly or through the cam shaft or timing gear, so that the dynamoelectric machine can be used as a motor to drive the engine through the reduction gearing for starting purposes and is then driven directly at engine speed as a generator. When the shaft 3 is the driver, the ring 6 is forced by the inclined faces of the ratchet teeth into engagement with the clutch teeth of the gear 12, and when the engine starts and the shaft 4 drives, the ring 6 is forced into engagement with the teeth 13 on the pinion 8. As shown, the gear 12 is yieldingly positioned by a spring 17 and is mounted on rubberbushed bolts 16 on a central spider portion 14.
