Abstract
164,426. Duacombe, T. H. Feb. 6, 1920. Variable-speed gearing. - Comprises change-speed gearing for motor-vehicles in which the high speed or direct drive is through a one-way clutch so that on this speed the driven shaft can overrun the driving shaft, the drive on other speeds being positive in both directions. Epicyclic gearing of a known kind is shown, in which for the direct drive the engineshaft 1 is coupled to the driven shaft 25 through a ratchet gearing 27 and a multi-plate clutch 21. The other speeds are transmitted through the outer drum 13 only of the plate clutch, this drum being fixed to the driven shaft, which cannot in this case overrun the driving shaft.
