Abstract

706,788. Variable-speed gearing. SIBA SOC. ITALIANA BREVETTI AUTOMOBILISTICI AR.L., and KREIS, F. May 15, 1951 [May 13, 1950], No. 11326/51. Class 80 (2) An automatic variable-speed gear employing centrifugal clutches and overrunning freewheels and providing three forward speeds comprises a driving shaft 4, a coaxial driven gear 18 and three secondary shafts 1, 8, 9 on each of which is mounted a centrifugal clutch so that the three clutches 2, 10, 12 are approximately in the same plane. Wheels 5, 6, 7 are secured to the shaft 4, which is mounted on a two-part casing 14. First gear is obtained when clutch 2, which is driven by wheels 5, 3, reaches a predetermined speed and is engaged to connect wheel 3 with shaft 1, when a drive is transmitted through freewheel 20, wheels 15, 16 and freewheel 21 to wheel 18 and its coupling teeth 19. As the speed increases, clutch 10, whose internal part is driven from wheel 16 through wheel 17 and shaft 8, is engaged to give a second gear drive from wheel 6 through gear ring 11, clutch 10,wheels 17, 16 and freewheel 21 to wheel 18, while freewheel 20 overruns. For third gear; clutch 12, whose internal part is driven from wheel 18 through a wheel (not shown) on shaft 9, is engaged to connect shaft 9 with wheel 13 and transmit drive from wheel 7 through wheel 13 and the wheel not shown to wheel 18, while freewheels 20 and 21 overrun. In a modification for a railway shunting engine, a running wheel is rotatably supported around the casing 14 and has internal teeth which are engaged by an intermediate wheel mounted in the casing and driven by the wheel 18.
