Abstract

Clutches, free-wheel; variable-speed toothed gearing.-Relates to transmission mechanism for motor vehicles of the kind in which a friction treewheel clutch comprising a screw-operated cone clutch is provided between the engine and the road-wheels, to facilitate changing gear and so that the driven shaft can over-run the engineshaft. According to the present invention, the screw and the nut controlling the operation of the clutch are mounted (a) upon the member connected to the engine when the clutch is between the engine and the change-speed gear, or (b) upon the member connected to the road wheels when the clutch is in the change-speed gear-box, or is between the gear-box and the road wheels. The driving-shaft e carries one member d of the clutch the other member c being formed as a nut working on a screw b fixed to the driven shaft a. The direction of the threads of the screw is such that the engine torque tends to tighten the clutch, so that the driven shaft a, when it tends to over-run the engine-shaft, releases the clutch. The cone c is normally forced into engagement with the member d by a circumferential spring g acting between stops b<1>, c<2> on the screw and the cone respectively. Modifications are described in which (1) the screw and nut are carried by the driving shaft, and (2) the clutch is applied to the sliding gear-wheel of the change-speed gear through which the direct drive is obtained, so that the clutch acts only on the direct drive and one lower speed.
