Abstract

27,734. Watts, C. J. Dec. 16. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to epicyclic toothed driving-gear for motor cars, so constructed that the car may be started without shock, and whereby the speed of the car may be regulated or stopped by means of one lever. The motor shaft a drives a pinion b, which gears with four pinions c mounted on a plate e, to which is attached the chain-wheel f, as shown in Fig. 1. The pinions c gear with teeth on one of the internal faces of the flange of the piece g<2>. The other internal face of this flange is slightly coned to form one member of a friction clutch, the other member h being forced into contact by means of the spring i, and brought out by means of the collar j operated, in the usual manner, by a lever. By braking, by means of a band brake, the flange g of the piece g<2>, the wheel f is driven at a reduced speed, while, by allowing the spring to act, the clutch, flange, and pinions become relatively fixed, and the wheel f is driven direct from the motor. The clutch and band brake are operated by the same lever, but are never acting at the same time, and, at the time when neither is acting, the engine is free.
