Abstract

6898. McKeen, W. R. March 22. Clutches; toothed gearing.-Relates to clutch and two-speed gearing controlled by compressed elastic fluid for transmitting power from the motor to the driving-axle of railway and like motor-cars, as described in Specificataon No. 6900, A.D. 1906. Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation on the axle 2. A sprocket-wheel 4, driven from a crank-shaft of the engine, is loosely mounted upon and may be connected by a clutch to the sleeve 3, which is loose upon the axle 2, and may drive it at either of two speeds. The clutch comprises a carrier 5 secured to a sprocket-wheel, and provided with an inwardlydirected flange 7, adapted to be gripped between clutch members 10 11, the two members being drawn together by means of bolts 12 and link-work operated from a sliding sleeve 18. The sleeve 3 drives the axle 2 through two-speed clutch gearing in which the clutch member 34 locks either of the toothed wheels 29, 33 to the axle, the wheel 29 being keyed to the sleeve 3, and the wheel 33 driven from the wheel 29 through a countershaft. The countershaft and the operating means for the clutch and speed gear are carried by a frame 25 loosely mounted upon the sleeve and axle, and further spring-supported from the frame of the vehicle. The clutch sleeve 18 and the clutch member 34 of the speed gear are operated through pivoted levers 22, 40 by hand or fluid pressure acting in cylinders 44,45.
