Abstract

4868. Hall, R. F., and Hall, F. H. Feb. 28. Brakes. - Relates to motor road vehicles in which brakes applied to the live back axle are enclosed within the differential - gear box and arranged to act upon the members of the differential gear. Figs. 4 and 5 show a side elevation and horizontal section respectively of one modification in which the brake bands i act upon both the driving - drum and the driven members of a differential gear of the spur-wheel type. A pinion e on the end of the longitudinal transmission shaft drives a bevel-wheel d secured on the outside of a drum, which encloses and carries the planetary pinions gearing with the driven members f<2> , f<3>, .secured one to each member g', g<2> of the live axle. The bosses of the gear-wheel, f<2>, f<3> are provided with brake disks having flanged peripheries h<1> of the same diameter as the drum, the drum and the disks being gripped by bands i operated by the gearing shown in Fig. 4. The gearing comprises two toothed pinions m, m<1>, gearing together and engaging racks n on the ends of the brake band. The spiudle of one of the pinions passes through the casing, and is connected to a suitable operating - lever. In a modification, the brake is applied to the driving-member of a differential gear of the bevel-wheel type, and the driven members are secured, one to a solid live axle driving one road wheel, and the other to a sleeve mounted on the axle and driving the other road wheel. The gear casing is split horizontally into two parts, the bottom part being the larger and carrying the bearings, and the top part forming a removable cover.
