Abstract
10,661. Carey, A. B. May 9. Motor cycles ; driving-mechanism ; brakes.-Relates to a three-speed epicyclic driving-gear for motor road d vehicles and motor cycles. In Fig. 1, the invention is shown applied to a shaft a driven by an engine directly or through a chain or like wheel i. Between toothed wheels b, b<1> of different diameters keyed to the shaft a is a loose sleeve c<1> bearing a driven sprocket c, or the like, and arms or discs d, carrying planet pinions e, e<1> meshing with the wheels b, b<1>. Loose wheels f, f<1> are provided with internally - toothed flanges f<2> in mesh with the pinions e, e', and with flanges f<3> on their outer sides internally coned to receive clutches h, h<1> sliding on the shaft a. The clutches h, h<1> are operated simultaneously by levers k or otherwise. The wheels f, f<1> may be gripped separately by band brakes g, g<1>. When the clutches are in engagement, the gear revolves as a whole, transmitting the highest speed, and the brakes may be used for braking. When the clutches and the brakes are disengaged, the motor runs free. When the brake on one side is applied, the epicyclic gearing on that side comes into action, a diminished speed being imparted to the bearings of the planet pinions and consequently to the driven sprocket c, the gearing on the other side running free. An application to the hub of a motor cycle or tri-car driving-wheel is shown in Fig. 2, where a hollow shaft a<x>, carrying the driven sprocket &c. i at one end, sliding clutches h<x> at both ends, and sun-wheels b of different diameters, one at each end, rides upon the usual fixed spindle j. Discs dx at the sides of the hub c<x>, which is recessed, carry planet pinions e meshing with teeth on inner flanges of loose wheels f, outer flanges f on which are gripped internally by expanding brakes g<x>. The invention may be applied to a hub in which a spindle revolves in external bearings, when the arrangement will be similar to that shown in Fig. 1, the discs d being larger and provided with flanges for spoke heads. The clutch h is in this case carried by rods passing horizontally through bosses on the chain-wheel i, the clutch h<1> being carried by similar rods passing through bosses on a chain - wheel arranged for pedalling on the other side of the hub.
