Abstract

5330. Hodgkins, F. H. March 9. Motor road vehicles. - A reversing-gear of known type is combined with a brake and optionally also with speed-changing mechanism. A double friction clutch 13, which can slide on a transmission shaft 11, may be caused to engage with either of two loose members 16 driven in opposite directions from a shaft 21. A brake device 37 is arranged to act on the clutch 13. The clutch 13 is connected by a key 14 to a rod 10, movable inside the shaft 11 to effect reversal. The shaft 11 is supported in bearings 12 and transmits power through bevel gearing 32, 33 and flexible shafts 34 to, say, the rear axle of a motor-vehicle. A gear 45 upon the clutch 13 may, alternatively, transmit the power. The members 16 may be driven at different speeds through rings of teeth 17, 17', 17<11> and pinions 20, 20<1>, 20", which may be separately locked to the shaft 21. A key 22, carried on a rod 25 which can slide inside the shaft 21, projects through slots 23 and is adapted to enter slots 24 in the bosses of the pinions 20 &c. The hub portions of the pinions 20 &c. are formed with cam-faces 31 to facilitate movement of the key 22, which has bevelled ends 22<1>, Fig. 4. In a modification the double friction clutch has plane faces.
