Abstract

5688. Clague, J. J., and Callow, D. T. March 13. Motor road vehicles.-In change-speed &c. gearing, suitable for motor-cars, of the class employing pairs of loose gears and clutches, two sliding sleeves are employed having feathers &c. extending in opposite directions from a plane containing their inner ends. These sleeves D, D<1> slide upon the transmission shafts A<1>, A, which are squared and carry feathers or pairs of feathers E, E<1>, respectively, extending oppositely as shown. The loose gears B<1> ... H and B' ... H<1> have grooves in their bosses for engaging the feathers E, E<1>, respectively, and, as the sleeves D, D' are slid together by a yoke F, it is clear that no more than one meshing pair of gears can be in driving relation at once. The boss clutch grooves are formed with helical approaches, as shown in Fig. 4, to facilitate operation. The gears H, H<1> are connected by an idler I for reversing, and loose rings K are provided to give a " free engine.
