Abstract
5455. Searle, E., and London General Omnibus Co. March 4. Variable - speed chain gearing.-In change-speed gearing for motor-vehicles of the type comprising driving and driven shafts A, B in line and a parallel lay shaft C, the shaft C is geared to the shafts A, B by 'silent' chains, i.e. by chains of the invertedtooth type built up of links pivoted together in sets. Chains - wheels E<1>, F, G, fast on the shaft C, are connected by such chains to a wheel E fast on .the shaft A, and to wheels F<1>, G<1> loose on the shaft B, respectively. A double clutch member H, sliding on feathers on the shaft B, may be engaged with a clutch member e on the wheel E for direct driving, or with a clutch member f on the wheel F<1> for the first layshaft drive. A sliding-member H<1> may be engaged with a clutch member g on the wheel G<1> to effect the second lay-shaft drive. For reversed driving, a spur-wheel J upon the member H<1> may be brought into engagement with a like pinion J<1> fast on the shaft C. The whole is enclosed in a casing D.
