Abstract

16,959. Lanchester, F. W. Aug. 3. Driving-gear.-A change gear of the epicyclic type described in Specification No. 4806, A.D. 1900, [Abridgment Class Locomotives &c], and applicable to power-propelled vessels, is constructed with a clutch and brake composed of friction discs. The motor crank shaft a is provided with discs i which revolve with the shaft a. These are enclosed in an outer casing d, to the inside of which is fitted a series of discs, as shown in Fig. 1. The discs are provided with oil slits j, Fig. 2. The box d is keyed to the power shaft eof the vessel and also to the disc c, which carries pins on which rotate the pinions b of the epicyclic gear. A sleeve f, operated by a lever h, is mounted on the shaft e ; on movement of the sleeve to the right, the projections g press the discs together, thus making a direct connection between the shafts a, e. By movement of the lever and sleeve to the left, the discs i<1> are pressed against the stationary discs fixed to the inside of the casing l<1>, thereby applying the brake. The discs may be made in segments, as shown in Fig. 5, the outside segments n baing fastened to the casing d, Fig. 1. The driven shaft may be supported by pitch-line rollers embodied in the low-gear train as described in Specification No. 5748, A.D. 1896, [Abridgment Class Locomotives &c.].
