Abstract

590. Dodson, E. July 1. Variable-speed friction gearing for motorvehicles is combined with an epicyclic changespeed gear and a friction clutch. The engine b drives a disk e, which can slide along its shaft to engage different parts of a driven cone f. This cone is slid able on its shaft g, so that it is pressed into engagement with the disk e by an adjustable spring h and can be moved away from the disk to disengage the gear. The shaft g drives the road wheel through a friction disk clutch j, an epicyclic two-speed gear m, and chain gearing p. The clutch j is controlled by means of a rod l and a cam k, and the epicyclic gear is controlled by means of a brake s and a rod t.
