Abstract
177,981. Loveridge, G. March 18, 1921. Variable - speed gearing for motor vehicles comprises an epicyclic train controlled by a fluid brake, the driving shaft being directly coupled to the planet carrier so that the maximum speed of the driven shaft is twice that of the driving-shaft. The planet - carrier or casing A is bolted to the engine flywheel. One of the sun-wheels D is connected by chain gear I to a pump K acting as a fluid brake, and the other sun-wheel E is coupled through the shaft G, universal joints, and reversing gear P, R, to the vehicle axle. By controlling the inlet and outlet of the pump, the sunwheel D can.be allowed to run freely, or can be checked, or held stationary, the speed of the driven shaft varying from zero to twice the engine speed. The pedal controlling the vehicle brake may be arranged to close the inlet of the pump so as to allow the engine to run freely.
