Variable-speed gearing; clutches, free-wheel.- In variable-speed gearing for vehicles &c. having a one-way connection between the driving-shaft 1 and driven shaft 2 so that the latter may overrun the former on the direct drive, such connection is adapted to be locked at will to prevent overrunning. The pinion 5 which is effective for the direct drive and for the first reduced speed is loose on a sleeve 4 splined on the shaft 2. The one-way clutch connects the pinion 5 and sleeve 4 so that when teeth 5<c> on the pinion engage teeth 10<a> on an extension 10 of the shaft 1, the one-way direct drive is operative. When the sleeve 4 is thrust home by a striking collar 7, teeth 4<c> upon it engage relatively short teeth 10<b> on the part 10, so that the shafts 1, 2 are positively locked together. The one-way clutch comprises a coil spring 6a which for one direction of turning of loose pinion 5@ coils so as to grip a nut 6, so that the nut screws upon a steep thread 4a on the sleeve 4 until ratchet teeth 8 on the faces of nut and pinion drivingly engage. On the shaft 2 overrunning, the nut 6 unscrews. The pinion 5 is supported on the other side by a coned projection 4b. The screw thread 5<b> shown in the boss of the pinion allows the pinion to pass over the sleeve thread in assembling.
