Abstract

327,549. Stancliffe, C. W. March 12, 1929. Locking by frictional detents.-In an automobile, a free-wheel coil clutch of the expanding or contracting type is provided between the gear box and the cardan shaft. A sprag to prevent undesired reverse movement of the vehicle may also be provided and in the preferred form the device is combined with the gear box as shown in the figure. A driving shaft 2 projects through the end-wall 1 of the gear box and has splined to it a drum 5, held in position by nuts 10. The inner surface of the drum forms one element of the free-wheel clutch, spring coils 14 of which are tapered as shown and are attached at the outer end 14a to a collar 13 splined to the driven shaft 11. The end of the driven shaft is chambered to receive the end of the driving shaft with the interposition of a flanged, phosphor-bronze bearing sleeve 12. Splined to the driven shaft and retained in position by a nut 20 is a member 15, having clutch teeth to co-operate with teeth on a slidable dog member 30 splined to the drum 5 and operated externally to give a positive, bidirectional drive when required. A pinion 19 provides a speedometer drive. A member 22 which forms one element of the sprag device is mounted on the drum 5 with the interposition of a bearing sleeve 21, and has secured to it the outer end of the coil spring 23, which co-operates with a fixed drum 24 bolted to the gear box casing. In order that the sprag may be put out of action when required, the member 22 is provided with clutch teeth 25 to engage teeth on the dog member 30 and so put it into, or out of, driving connection with the driving shaft 2. The dog 30 is adapted to be set in three positions to give a bi-directional drive, a neutral position in which free-wheeling is permitted, and a connection to the sprag. The casing 32 may, if desired, be integral with the gear-box casing. Specification 318,474, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variablespeed, &c.], is referred to.
