Abstract

538,633. Free - wheel clutches. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO. Jan. 31, 1940, No. 1942. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1939. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] Relates to a vehicle of the kind described in Specification 539,701 in which the vehicle is propelled by a main engine and an auxiliary engine which is automatically started and brought into action when the load and speed conditions are such that the main engine cannot deal satisfactorily with them. In the present arrangement the auxiliary engine is adapted to be connected to the propelling mechanisms by an automatic one-way clutch 29, and is provided with a control system such that when the vehicle speed lies between (say) 20 and 35 miles per hour and the main engine throttle is wide open the auxiliary engine is started and the clutch 29 automatically connects it to the driving gear so that it assists in driving the vehicle. A universal joint 30 is coupled to a stub shaft 52, having a steep-pitch screw thread 68 engaged by a clutch member 67, provided with ratchet teeth 66 adapted to engage similar teeth 65, on a sleeve 63 fixed to the auxiliary engine flywheel 62. The sleeve 63 carries a brake member 70 which engages the outer surface of the clutch member 67, so that when the shaft 52 is driven by the main engine but the auxiliary engine shaft is stopped this brake causes the clutch member 67 to stay in the disengaged position shown abutting a thrust collar 74. However, when the auxiliary engine is started up and speeds up until it rotates faster than the shaft 52 the brake 10 causes the clutch member 67 to unscrew along with the shaft 52, until the clutch teeth 65, 66 engage, and the auxiliary engine then assists the main engine.
