Abstract

870,855. Ratchet clutches. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Aug. 28, 1958 [Aug. 30, 1957], No. 27465/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A free-wheeling clutch 28, provided in the shaft connecting the compressor of a jet propulsion enging (see Group XXVI) with its turbine, comprises an internally-threaded sleeve 133 engaging with a quick pitch thread on the turbine shaft 29. A series of resilient members 140 on the sleeve bear against the face of the flange 141 of a sleeve 142 keyed or splined on the compressor shaft 27 and urged towards the turbine by a spring 143. When the speed of the turbine shaft exceeds that of the compressor the frictional drag due to the members 140 rotates the sleeve 133 on the shaft 29 to advance it towards the compressor, until dogs 134 on the sleeve engage with corresponding dogs 135 on the compressor shaft to establish a driving connection.
