Abstract
1348020 Locomotive power plant MMSURI 20 Dec 1971 58976/71 Heading B7H [Also in Division F1] A power unit for high speed locomotives employs in combination a diesel engine D and a gas turbine G and includes an hydraulic transmission device 3 between the output shaft 1 of the diesel engine and the input shaft 5 for the locomotive axle drive 15, a clutch 8 for direct connection between the output shaft of the gas turbine and the input shaft 5 for the locomotive axle drive 15, coupling means 4 disposed between the output shaft of the diesel engine and the input shaft and conventional means to engage or disengage selectively the hydraulic transmission device, the gas turbine clutch and the coupling means. In one form of operation, in the locomotive starting position, only the output shaft of the diesel engine drives the input shaft 5 for the wheel axle drive through the hydraulic transmission device 3 and at this stage the coupling means 4 and the clutch 8 between the gas turbine and the input shaft are inoperative, but after the locomotive has attained a predetermined speed the hydraulic transmission device is rendered inoperative to cut out the diesel engine power and simultaneously the gas turbine is engaged with the input through the clutch 8 of the gas turbine to achieve higher speed of the locomotive. At a predetermined higher speed the coupling means 4 is made operative so that the diesel engine starts giving additional power to the input shaft which is already being driven by the gas turbine through its clutch and thereby delivering the combined horse power of the engine and the gas turbine at higher speed ranges of the locomotive. Preferably the coupling means is a fluid-mechanical coupling consisting of a fluid coupling and a parallelly disposed mechanical plate clutch, the fluid coupling having a precalculated slip characteristic, but it may be a conventional fluid coupling or a plate clutch designed with permissible high slip at the time of engagement. A two speed gear-box may be disposed between the input shaft and the axle drive.
