Abstract

A motor vehicle has an engine connected to wheels by a manually operated constant mesh gearbox 1 in which at least one ratio is established by moving two members, one of which is a clutch ring, into meshing engagement, which is prevented by a stop 13 until an electronic bogie device 11 detects synchronism, (e.g. from signals from speed sensors 25, 27 on the input and output shafts 3, 6). To provide synchronism the device 11 may, where necessary brake the input shaft by actuating a valve 19 to increase the pressure of lubricant pumped by a gearbox driven pump 33, and may, where necessary, act on the fuel injector 5 to increase the supply of fuel.
