Abstract

538,047. Driving and controlling aircraft. TAMPIER, R. April 25, 1940, No. 7466. [Class 4] An aircraft is driven by two engines 2, 3 which drive a power shaft 9 through bevel gear, sleeves 8, 8<1>, and clutches 10, 10<1>, change speed gear 30, 31, 32, 33 being arranged between the power shaft 9 and a transmission shaft geared to two propellers 22, 23. The transmission shaft is in two parts normally connected together by a clutch 24, but when the clutch is disengaged a gear 26, which may be integral with one part of the clutch, is brought into mesh with a gear 29 on the sleeve 8', and if the clutch 10<1> be then disengaged the two propellers can be driven independently by the two engines to give lateral control. The change speed gear, which has its wheels 32, 33 connected together and slidable on the transmission shaft, gives a step up speed ratio between the shaft 9 and the propeller shafts. The transmission between the engines and the gear box may be of the kind described in Specification 538,046.
