433,541. Facilitating change of speed; free-wheel clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AKT.-GES., Friedrichshafen-on-Bodensee, Germany. Feb. 12, 1934, No. 4663. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1933. [Class 80 (ii)] In a tail clutch for the gear-box of a motorvehicle, controlled by a sleeve 19 splined on the gear-box shaft 12, a member 24, which is loaded by springs 29 and caused to rotate with the shaft 12 by pins 25, has conical surfaces 24<1> and 24<11> adapted to coact with conical surfaces 16<1> and 28<1> formed respectively in a drum 16 secured to the cardan shaft 18 and on a ring 28 formed on the control fork 20. The clutch shown comprises rollers 15 arranged between the drum 16 and a polygonal member 13 formed on the shaft 12. A disc 23 engaging helical splines 19<1> on the sleeve 19 has fingers 23<1> engaging between the rollers. Normally the fingers 23<1> are so located as to enable the clutch to provide bidirectional drive. On moving the sleeve 19 to the right, after disengaging the engine clutch, the disc 23 is turned so as to render the clutch unidirectional, and the surfaces 24<11>, 28<1> are engaged and the surfaces 16<1>, 24<1> disengaged. Thus the shaft 12 is braked. On returning the sleeve to the left, the surfaces 16<1>, 24<1> are engaged and the surfaces 24<11>, 28<1> disengaged, whereby the shaft 12 is speeded up before the clutch is again rendered bidirectional.
