Abstract

416,090. Claw clutches. LINLEY, C., (Representative of LINLEY, C. M.), 357, Camden Road, Holloway, London. March 10, 1933, No. 7326. [Class 80 (ii).] In order to prevent engagement of a claw clutch except at synchronism, a ball (or roller) 11 is arranged between one dog member 5, provided with a pocket 12 on either side of which the ball is capable of limited arcuate movement, and a disc 13 which is in light frictional engagement, such as by oil drag, with the other dog member 8. The ball is controlled by abutments 7<c> and 13b on a reduced part 7<b> of the shaft 7 on which the member 5 is splined and on an axially-extending flange 13<a> of the disc 13, the pocket 12 being midway between the abutments 7<c> and lying over a spline, whereby on disengagement the spline ejects the ball from the pocket. Alternatively, the ring 13 may have a ball-retaining lip and be itself retained within the member 8, which latter may then be the movable member of the clutch, whereby the ball is withdrawn from the pocket on disengagement. During overrunning, the ball rolls against one or other of the abutments 7<c>, as shown in Fig. 3, and thus prevents engagement, the disc 13 then rotating in synchronism with the member 5 and slipping on the member 8. As soon as the relative direction of rotation is reversed, the ball rolls into register with the pocket and engagement can take place. Instead of or in addition to the abutments 13<b>, the disc 13 may have a radial projection engaging an arcuate slot in the shaft so as to limit its movement relative to the latter. As applied to preselective changespeed gearing, engagement is effected by means of a spring 15 interposed between the setting lever and a fork 14.
