Abstract

525,481. Friction clutches. KINCHIN, J. Feb. 22, 1939, No. 5849. [Class 80 (ii)] The engine crankshaft 1 carries a flywheel 2 forming the driving member of the clutch, and an extension in the form of a stub shaft 3 for supporting the driven parts. Surrounding this stub shaft is a driven sleeve 4 free to rotate on but capable of slight axial movement relative to the stub shaft, being confined endwise between a thrust collar 5 at one end and the flywheel at the other. The sleeve 4 carries at its rear end a flange 7 for connection to a splined coupling member 8 and has, on its outer surface, a series of quick-pitched helical ribs or splines 9. The driven member 10 of the clutch is carried by a sleeve 11 having internal ribs or splines adapted to engage those on the sleeve 4. The sleeves 11, 4 have, respectively, flanges 13, 14 connected by clutch springs 15 which force the clutch members together. To disengage the clutch, the flanges are brought closer together by a pedal-operated cam 18 engaging the outer ends of levers 16, 17. The helical connection causes the clutch members to be engaged more strongly the greater the torque. Further, if the vehicle over-runs, the clutch member 10 is withdrawn at a speed depending on the strength of the springs 15.
