Abstract

8343. Hillman, W. April 2. Clutches, friction.- Relates to clutches for motor-vehicles, of the type in which a coil clutch is operated by an auxiliary plate clutch. A coil spring b is secured at one end by a split clamp b<1> to a sleeve a2 on the driving-shaft a, and at the other end by a clamp d<2> to a clutch disk d'. A leather or other washer d<4> is arranged between the disk d<1> and a disk d secured on a sleeve c' on the driven shaft c. When the disk d' is brought by the clutch pedal into engagement with the washer d' and disk d, the coil b is tightened on the sleeve c<1>. A curved end a<3> on the sleeve a<2> engages a recess c<2> in the end of the sleeve c<1> to permit universal movement of the shafts a, c. A sleeve f<1> surrounds the spring b so as to contain oil and to prevent injury to the coil when the shaft c overruns.
