Abstract

122,775. Alexander, F. H. June 7, 1918. Clutches, claw and friction. -In a clutch of the kind in which one member carries a dog pressed radially by springs or by centrifugal force, or both, and is moved axially to bring the dog into engagement with a recess or stop in the other member, the dog first engages a cam surface leading up to the recess &c. so that the driven member is thereby speeded up before the drive becomes positive; means for mounting the dog in the male member also is described. Fig. 6 shows a form in which dogs D are pressed radially by springs 5 or by centrifugal force and are carried in an axially-moving member M, the recesses 6 being formed at the summits of cams C so arranged that the dogs D must pass along the cams and start the rotation of the driven part before they engage the recesses 6. The dogs may be carried at the ends x of levers 1, Fig. 4, and may be pressed inwardly by springs 5 and by centrifugal weights 8 to engage an external cam and notch on the female member. The springs may act directly on pivoted dogs or pawls. The dog D. Fig. 8, may be secured to a lubricated barrel 9 allowed slight rotation in a fixed sleeve 10 on the lever 1 by a loose key 13 and cushioned endways by springs 12 so as to allow for small relative vibrations of the driving and driven member.
