Abstract

Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed gear of the type in which the wheels are engaged and disengaged by endways movement, and consists in interposing a clutch between the driven wheels of the speed gear and the road transmission gear, in order that the drivers, the driven wheels, or the whole of the change-speed gear may be isolated during the operation of changing the gear. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which the sliding-wheels are mounted on the driving-shaft a which is coupled to the motor shaft by a friction clutch ; the driven wheels are formed on a sleeve d which is normally coupled to the driven shaft b by a claw clutch e held up by a spring j, Fig. 2. Tn another arrangement, a friction clutch is used. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the driven wheels are fixed on their shaft, and the clutch e is employed in conjunction with the bevel-wheel c' on the cross-shaft.
