1218. Crouan, H. Jan. 17. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to change speed gear, and consists of an arrangement for preventing the gear from being changed unless the motor is uncoupled. The lever F, pivoted to the shaft T, carries a sleeve E and, on the other arm, a tongue K fitting into recesses cut in the wheel R connected with the change speed gear. The tongue prevents motion of the wheel unless it is disconnected by the foot-lever P, which, at the same time, moves the sleeve E and uncouples the motor. Between the main recesses in the wheel R corresponding to change of speed, intermediate recesses are cut, thus preventing the sudden recoupling which would occur if the tongue could slide along the wheel and suddenly drop into a main recess. A similar arrangement is described in which a rectilinear form of rack is used.
