Abstract

5597. Deane, T. W. March 17. Motor road vehicles.-In a change-speed and reversing gearing for motor road vehicles &c., in which the driving and driven wheels are in constant mesh, means are provided for coupling or uncoupling any pair of wheels. Wheels d, e, f, loosely mounted on a driving-shaft b, gear with wheels k, i, j, loosely mounted on the driven shaft ; wheels g, h, loose on the two shafts, are connected by an idle wheel to provide a reversing- gearing. The wheels are maintained in position by collars m, m<x>. A block o is arranged in a recess n in the boss of each of the wheels, and is pressed outwards against the shaft by a spring p. A key r, provided with one or more recesses s, is arranged to slide in a groove q in each of the shafts and lies flush with the surface of the shaft. When the keys r are moved so as to bring the recesses s into register with the blocks o of a pair of wheels, the blocks are forced into the recesses and serve to couple the wheels to the shafts. When the recesses and blocks are not in register, no motion is transmitted. The wheels on one of the shafts may be fixed thereto. Ball bearings may be arranged between the collar and wheels.
