Abstract

28,218. Holland, S. Dec. 23. Motor road vehicles, driving-gear for. Figs. 2 and 3 show an arrangement of gearing for obtaining three forward speeds and one backward speed. On the driving-shaft A are mounted four toothed wheels B, C, D, E of various sizes. The wheels B, C, D gear with corresponding wheels G, H, J loosely mounted on the driven shaft F, and between the wheel E and a wheel K, loose on the shaft F, is arranged an idle wheel for the purpose of obtaining a reverse speed. Between the wheels G, H and the wheels J, K are arranged clutch sleeves M, keyed so as to slide on the shaft F. Each sleeve is formed with projections and recesses adapted to engage a corresponding projection and recess in the adjoining faces of each of the spur-wheels. The clutches may be moved so as to fix any of the wheels to the shaft F. The clutches are moved by means of forked levers coupled by links to cranks Q, W fixed to the shafts P, V respectively, or, instead of forked levers, pinions may engage circumferential grooves forming racks in the sleeves. The shaft P carries a lever S which projects upwards in a slot T in a frame U with H-shaped slots ; the shaft V surrounds the shaft P and carries a lever Y projecting upwards into the slot Z of the frame. When the clutch sleeves M are out of engagement, the levers S, Y face each other at the centre of the slots, and projections s, y on the levers engage notches in the frame to retain them in this position. A flexible lever or handle a, loosely mounted on the shaft P, passes between the levers S, Y and is provided with a hole a<1>, which can be brought into engagement with projections s<2>, y<2> on the levers. By bringing the lever a into engagement with either of the levers S, Y, the lever can be moved in the slot T or Z in either direction so as to move one of the clutch sleeves into engagement with any desired wheel. Notches may be provided in the frame at the ends of the slot to engage the projections s, y and so retain the levers in position. The toothed wheels may be fixed to the driven shaft F and loosely mounted on the driving-shaft A.
