Abstract

A damped resilient connection between driving and driven members comprises three couplings in parallel, namely a lost-motion spline coupling, a spring coupling and a friction coupling forming the damping device. The arrangement is particularly advantageous in vehicles for reducing the transmission of torsional fluctuations from the engine to components coupled thereto when in neutral. As shown in Fig. 1 a clutch hub 8 has a lost-motion spline connection with a sleeve 12 rotating with a driven shaft 14. A spring 16 has its ends fast respectively with the sleeve 12 and with a cap 15 fixed to the clutch hub 8, the spring serving to connect these parts torsionally and to urge the sleeve and hub together to compress a friction lining 21 between end surfaces 23, 22 thereof to provide friction damping. In Fig. 3 a modified arrangement forms a damped resilient connection between driving and driven shafts 25, 27, a sleeve 12 being splined at 13 to the shaft 25 for rotation therewith and having a lost-motion spline coupling 11 with the shaft 27. The sleeve 12 is formed with an internal conical surface 28 frictionally engaged by a conical surface of a sleeve 29 fast with the shaft 27 to provide friction damping. A spring 16 urges the conical surfaces into engagement and torsionally connects the sleeve 29 to a ring 30 which is in screw-threaded engagement with the sleeve 12 and locked thereto by a pin 31.
