Abstract

281,237. Junkers, H. Nov. 29, 1926, [Convention date]. Yielding toothed wheels; universal joints.- Relates to torque-transmission couplings, particularly for connecting a reciprocating engine to a high-speed machine, of the kind in which a spring coupling is disposed concentrically and, in series with a friction coupling adapted to slip at a predetermined load. The engine shaft 1, Fig. 1, drives a shaft 3 through universal joints or the spring-pin coupling 2 shown, the shaft 3 carrying a disc 4 having radial recesses 5 normally aligned with recesses 9 in friction plates 7, 8. Tangenthat helical springs 6, bearing on the end walls of both sets of recesses, yield by compression to torque in either direction. The springs may close up solid on heavy load, when the plates 7, 8, pressed by springs 18 against the walls 10, 11 of a hollow toothed wheel 12, are caused to slip, and the drive through a pinion 20 to an air-compressor 22 ceases. The bearings 14, 15 for the wheel 12 are preferably plain, so that they damp spring oscillations. The universal coupling 2 may be dispensed with, and sufficient play allowed between the disc 4 and plates 7, 8, or, it is stated, may be disposed on the output side. Clutches, claw and friction.-The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), comprises also the modification shown in Fig. 4 (cancelled), in which the driving-wheel 42 has a spring coupling noly. and drives through a pinion 43 on a shaft 50, connected through a multipleplate coupling 60, 61 to a wheel 82 meshing with a driven pinion 84. The end plate 67 thrusts on a bearing 68 and the end plate 66 has splined engagement 69, 70 with the shaft 50 and is pressed by a spring 73 abutting on a shaft collar 71. The wheel 82 is carried in bearings 80, 81. By screw-and-nut gear 90, 91 the shaft 50 can be moved to the left, first to slacken the spring 73 to interrupt drive to the wheel 82. then to uncouple a dog clutch 45, 46 between the shaft and a sleeve-extension 44 of the pinion 43, and finally to release the spring 103 of a cone clutch 100, 104 and so isolate the shaft 50. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
