Abstract

664,671. One-way vehicle brakes. CHRYSLER CORPORATION. Aug. 1, 1947 [March 1, 1946], No. 20962/47. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXIV] A one-way brake mechanism for preventing a vehicle from running back, when parked or stopped on an incline, is arranged to be operatively associated with the driving side of a clutch located between the engine and gearbox. The one-way brake device 54, which as shown in Fig. 3, is of the known type comprising balls 66 wedging on inclined faces, is such that the outer surfaces of the balls bear against a member 55 rigid with the gearbox frame and the inner faces bear against inclined recesses on a sleeve 53, which is rotatable on gearbox input shaft 20, and is coupled by plates 52 and 24 and bolts 25 to the plate 22 forming the driving side of the friction clutch 23. Providing the gear train is engaged, the vehicle is prevented from running back so long as the clutch 23 is also engaged and the device prevents the movement that might take place, if no brake were fitted, due to the slip between the driving and driven members of a fluid coupling 14, the inclusion of which is made the subject of Specification 664,750, [Group XXXIV]. Undesired forward motion will be prevented in the same way by setting the gearbox lever for reverse drive.
