Abstract
440,326. Brakes for motor vehicles. BOOTH, J. I., and BOOTH, J. H., Idris, Lichfield Road, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield. March 24, 1934, No. 9240. [Class 103 (i)] In a device for preventing rearward movement of a motor vehicle when the gear is in forward drive and forward movement when the gear is in reverse by means of rollers wedging in recesses between a fixed member and a member in driving engagement with a shaft between the engine and the propeller or cardan shaft, a train of rollers is arranged in each recess. In Fig. 2, trains of rollers 13 are arranged in recesses formed between faces 12 on a member 11 splined on the shaft 8 extending from the gear-box to the clutch and a ring 10 disposed adjacent the gear-box and splined to a casing 21 fixed to the gear-box. A spring-pressed follower 14 urges the rollers into engagement with the faces of the recesses. The rotary member of the device may instead be connected to the constant mesh gear-wheel shaft. In Fig. 3, the device is arranged adjacent the clutch, the inner member 11 being secured to an extension 28 of the fixed casing 21 and the outer member 10 to a housing 25 carrying the clutch plate 23. The fly-wheel and the engine shaft are shown at 22, 24 respectively. The rotary member of the device may be coupled to the shaft by dogs or clutches so that the device may be put into and out of operation under the driver's control and this control may be interconnected with the clutch control so that the device is operative only when the clutch is disengaged.
