Abstract

559,677. Power plant; driving gear. HINDMARCH, T. March 2, 1942, Nos. 2746 and 5628. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXI, XXIV, XXVI and XXXIII] A single output shaft b is situated between and is driven through differential gearing by a plurality of prime mover shafts a, a<SP>1</SP>, the planet carrier f of the differential being fixed to the output shaft, and the prime mover shafts having gears c, c<SP>1</SP>, k, k<SP>1</SP>, for driving the differential sun wheels d, d<SP>1</SP> in one direction or the other according as the output shaft is to be driven ahead or astern ; means such as ratchet clutches a<SP>3</SP> are provided for preventing any prime mover shaft from running back should the power of that prime mover fail. The invention is applicable to the driving of tanks, rail and road vehicles, aircraft, ships, colliery winding gear and steel rolling machinery. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the gears c, c<SP>1</SP> on the shafts a, a<SP>1</SP>. mesh direct with the sun wheel gears d, d<SP>1</SP> for the direct drive, and the gears k, k<SP>1</SP> drive the sun wheel gears d<SP>1</SP>, d respectively through idler gears (not shown) for the reverse drive, suitable clutches being employed to select either drive as required. The ratchet clutch for preventing running back of the prime mover shafts comprises a clutch member a<SP>3</SP> sliding on spiral splines as on the shaft and having centrifugal pawls engaged with a fixed housing a<SP>4</SP>. When the shaft a ceases to drive and starts to run back the member a<SP>3</SP> slides along the shaft, and dogs thereon engage corresponding dogs on the fixed casing a<SP>4</SP>, the pawls disengaging as the dogs engage. When the engine is re-started and its torque exceeds that applied to it in the reverse direction by the other engine the member a<SP>3</SP> slides back again to dis-engage the dogs and the pawls are thrown into operation by centrifugal action. The invention may be applied to a V-type Diesel or other engine having two crank-shafts connected by a differential gear to a single output shaft.
