Abstract
860,804. Friction clutches. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Aug. 14, 1957 [Aug. 20, 1956], No. 25677/57. Class 80 (2). To prevent idle drag in a motor car transmission having a fluid coupling or, as shown, a hydrodynamic torque converter A between an engine driven shaft 1 and a shaft 26 connected to a change-speed gear (not shown), a centrifugal friction clutch B which engages above idling speed is connected in series between the engine-driven shaft 1 and the impeller 23 of the torque converter &c. Fast on the engine shaft 1 is a drum 2 carrying a U-sectioned ring 5 through which pass pins 7 carrying masses 10. With the car engine idling, springs 13 tend to turn the masses 10 about the pins 7 so that friction linings 11 on the masses are held clear of the internal periphery of a drum 22 fast with the impeller 23. With increasing engine speed, centrifugal force acts upon the masses 10 to turn them about the pins 7 and engage the friction linings 11 with the drum 22 for transmission of torque. Friction ratchet shoes 16 are pivoted on pins 17 within the U-shaped rings 5 and are biased lightly into engagement with the drum 22 by springs 18. The torque transmitted thereby is negligible when the engine drives the impeller 23, but when the impeller tends to drive the engine shaft 1, as for a towed start, the shoes 16 are wedged by the torque transmitted against the inner periphery of the drum 22. To by-pass the torque converter A., oil under pressure is admitted to a cylinder 37 to bias a piston 36 leftwards of Fig. 1 and engage a clutch disc 34 carried by a shaft 35.
