Abstract

431,318. Free-wheel clutches; facilitating change of speed. WOLSELEY MOTORS (1927), Ltd., and BODEN, 0., Drew's Lane, Ward End, Birmingham. Jan. 4, 1935, No. 290. [Class 80 (ii)] A free-wheel clutch, comprising rollers 5 arranged between a cam member 6 on the driving shaft 2 and a drum member 4 on the driven shaft 3, is adapted to be locked by sliding an externally-toothed member 7, splined on the shaft 2, into engagement with an internally-toothed ring 8 which has widelyspaced external teeth 11 co-operating with similarly-spaced internal teeth 12 on the drum 4 and which is located axially by spring rings 14. Springs 13 arranged between adjacent teeth 11, 12 normally urge the ring 8 forwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2. Thus engagement of the parts 7, 8 during drive is facilitated, since the ring 8 can turn rearwardly, while, when the shaft 3 tends to overrun, the rollers 5 are completely freed, facilitating the withdrawal of the member 7. When applied as the tail clutch for the gear-box of a motor vehicle, the member 7 is connected to the main clutch pedal so as to be withdrawn by the depression of the pedal, subsequent re-engagement being effected at any time by separate controlling means.
