Abstract
977,231. Controlling clutches; ratchet clutches. K. HAUSSERMANN, H. HAUSSERMANN, and L. HAUSSERMANN, [trading as LAMELLEN UND KUPPLUNGS BAU A. HAUSSERMANN]. April 11, 1961 [April 13, 1960], No. 12926/61. Headings F2E and F2L. The main friction disc clutch of a motor car &c. is engaged by the pressure of oil supplied from a single pump, the pump either being driven through a ratchet clutch from the flywheel-connected driving member of the main clutch or, for push starts &c., through a second ratchet clutch from the output-driven gear shaft of the main clutch. A flywheel-connected disc 1 carries a ring 2 formed with ratchet teeth engaged by spring-biased plungers 3 sliding axially in a flange of a sleeve 5<SP>1</SP> rotatable together with a helical gear 13 fast thereon to drive a pump 14 when the engine of the car has been started. The pressure of the oil thus supplied from the pump 14 engages a friction disc clutch 15 to transmit drive from the car engine to a shaft G connected to the car gearing. For push starts, the gearing of the car is engaged so that the shaft G drives a hub 12 having recesses engaged by radially-pivoted pawls 7 biased inwardly by springs 10 and carried in the flange of the pump drive sleeve 5<SP>1</SP>. Thus the pump 14 is driven by pushing the car, and oil under pressure is supplied to engage the friction disc clutch 15 to start the car engine. Above engine idle speed, the pawls 7 pivot radially outwards against the bias of the springs 10 under centrifugal force, to a position where they are clear of the recesses in the gear shaft hub 12.
