Abstract

537,811. Claw clutches. AKTIEBOLAGET LJUNGSTROMS ANGTURBIN. July 10, 1939, No. 20059. Convention date, July 8, 1938. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXI] A power transmission device ; which is especially applicable for motor vehicles fitted with a transverse gear engine installation B, Fig. 14, with an angular drive shaft E for driving the axle C, comprises a hydraulic variable low-speed drive A and a direct high-speed drive and means of Selectively transmitting power through one or the other of these drives. The selective means preferably includes a clutch G which acts synchronously. The impeller blades 22 of a hydraulic torque converter F, such as is described in Specification 381,368 are driven from the flywheel 16 of the engine by means of a friction clutch 50, 52, 54 actuated by a cam 62 and operated by lever mechanism from a shift lever, and the blades 22 are carried by a sleeve 24 through which passes the drive shaft 46 which can be clutched to a bevel pinion 76 acting to drive a pinion 74 geared to the shaft E. The turbine blades 30, 32, 34 are attached to a sleeve 40 which is also geared to the bevel pinion 76. The converter F also comprises reaction blades 36, 38. The sleeve 40 drives the pinion 76 through a reverse gear J comprising a gear 94 which for direct drive acts through an over-running clutch K, this clutch being cut out when a shift ring 110 is operated to bring in the reverse gears. The shift ring passes through a neutral position. When after initial drive of the car through the hydraulic converter it is desired to connect up the direct drive the converter is thrown out of gear and the clutch G operated to connect the high-speed clutch member 116 to its driven part 128 which is keyed to the gear 76. The member 116 is moved to the left by a lever 170 to throw in the clutch. A strong spring 174 normally keeps the clutch out of operation but by actuating a hydraulic piston 180 the lever 170 is relieved of the pressure of spring 174 and a spring 168 tends to move the clutch into operation under a substantially constant pressure. When the clutch is engaged teeth 124a, 124b shaped as in Fig. 11 engage between teeth 126a, 126b on the driven part 128. In order to prevent final engagement of the teeth until the speed of the driving member 116 crosses that of the member 128, which is geared to and driven by the shaft E, a blocking member 142 is provided which is freely mounted between the members 116, 128 and is driven frictionally from the member 128. This member 142 has teeth 154, which as shown in Fig. 9 are engaged by pilot teeth 132 on the member 116. Unless the parts 116 and 128 are rotating at the same speed the teeth 132 contact the faces of adjacent teeth 154 as shown, but when the speeds cross the teeth 132 lag and when in mid position the teeth 130 can move between the teeth 154 and thus permit driving connection between the teeth 124 and 126, and the drive is then taken over by the shaft 46 without jar. The member 142 may be pressed axially by a bent spring 146 or by a spring- pressed radially movable plunger which engages a cam face on the member 142.
