Abstract

879,436. Positive clutches. WOODWARD, M. H. Feb. 2, 1960 [Feb. 10, 1959], No. 4679/59. Class 80 (2). Positive clutch members 15, 28 having engageable teeth 20, 38 may be connected by a ratchet clutch 18, the inner race 16 of which is formed with a friction synchronizing cone 21 engageable by a corresponding cone 26 on a synchronizing ring 25 in splined engagement with the clutch member 28. In the form shown, for a motor car change-speed gear including a driving gearwheel 12 and a driven shaft 11, the clutch member 15 is bolted to the gear-wheel and the clutch member 28 is in splined engagement with the shaft. To engage the clutch teeth 20, 38 when the gear-wheel 12 is rotating more slowly than the shaft 11, corresponding to changing- down the motor car gearing, liquid under pressure is admitted through a duct 36 to a space 31 within the clutch member 28, this space having a fixed reaction wall 33 fast with the shaft and also being formed in part by the synchronizing ring 25 which is splined for axial movement relatively both to the clutch member 28 and to the shaft. As the liquid under pressure is admitted to the space 31, the synchronizing ring 25 is moved leftwards to engage the friction cones 21, 26. Accordingly, the inner race 16 of the ratchet clutch 18, which is freely rotatable on the shaft 11, is accelerated relatively to the gear-wheel 12, so that the following leftward movement of the clutch member 28 allows its splines 29 to slide into engagement with splines 19 on the inner race of the ratchet clutch. Acceleration of the driving means rotating the gear-wheel 12 then allows synchronization of the speed of rotation of the clutch member 15 with the clutch member 28, so that the teeth 20, 38 can slide into mesh. To disengage the teeth 20, 38, the space 31 is vented to exhaust via the duct 36, and liquid under pressure is instead supplied through a shaft duct 37 to a space 32 on the opposite side of the fixed reaction wall 33. If the teeth 20, 38 are to be engaged when the directions of relative rotation therebetween are reversed, corresponding to changing-up in the changespeed gear, the speed of rotation of the gearwheel 12 is first reduced by throttling down the motor car engine, until it is slightly less than that required for synchronization, with the ratchet clutch 18 overrunning as before.
