419,486. Variable - speed gearing. BERIA, A., 41, Via Magenta, Turin, Italy. Dec. 7, 1933, No. 34459. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1932. [Class 80 (ii).] An automatically variable-speed gear of the kind comprising in combination a multiple free wheel in which the speed ratio is varied by the eccentricity of the driving member in respect to the driven member, and an epicyclic gear train, comprises a drum 2 driven by the shaft 1 through a number of pairs of slider cranks 11, 11<a>, and free wheel devices 27, 26, 23, rotatably mounted in supports 32, 33, 34, 35, which can swing about a secondary shaft 3 to vary the eccentricity and hence the speed ratio of the drum 2 with respect to the shaft 1. The drum 2 is geared to the shaft 3 by wheels 4, 5, and clutch 36 and so to the planet carrier 8 of the epicyclic gear of which the annulus 12 is driven direct from the shaft 1 and the sun is connected to the driven shaft 9. The torque transmitted by the drum to the secondary shaft tends to rotate the drum about the said shaft which movement is controlled by a helical spring 42 on a shaft 41 connected to the drum by levers 51, 48, so that for every value of the torque transmitted the drum takes up a corresponding position and varies automatically the speed ratio of the gear. The gears 14, 39, and clutch 37 provide a reverse drive independent of the multiple free wheel device.
